Below are some quality tips from many Grebelites.
Not showering is a great time saver! Especially during exam time. A little deodorant can go a long way :) Liza Klassen Anything said during a Dutch Blitz game doesn't count in real life. Below are some quality tips from James Loewen Many people start first year University without a clue of how it really works. You go out, buy that new laptop, get all the cool stuff and pay for your school. But do you know how to actually get through class and the social life? Here are my tips from first year. The list is not comprehensive but will get you off to a good start. Tip 1: Live in a dorm Even if you are local, living in the dorm is a fantastic way to meet people and build your friend group that will support you through school and get you through the tough patches. Living at home just doesn't provide the same opportunities that the dorm does. Tip 2: Leave the laptop in your room I know you are all set to go and take all your notes on your laptop but this poses a number of problems that make it plain hard to get through the course. i) It's distracting. Facebook or xkcd and other similar sites will become the focus of your time in class rather than the lecture. Not only that but the people around you will be distracted as well. ii) Think about having to study. Studying off a laptop is plain hard. With nothing to keep you on track, the above point will be applicable to both studying and to the lecture time iii) Any course that has many formulas involved will make it near impossible to take notes iv) It's just another thing you have to carry around. Go the old fashioned route. Pen and paper and if you so desire copy it out later, but writing stuff down rather than typing it helps you learn so much more. Tip 3: Used textbooks all the way. This is for a few reasons. First, they can be much cheaper, and second they will already have marked the most important parts of the text giving you a head start on studying. Tip 4: Don't worry about sleep too much Everyone loves sleep, but if you sacrifice a bit, the best times and memories you will have are from those late night hangouts and chats. Tip 5: Get to know some upper year students and learn the best places and things to do around campus. Upper years are cool people and they generally know the coolest things to do around campus and the local hotspots. Tip 6: Have fun but don't forget school University is the best time of your life so enjoy it. Just remember that if you don't do your work you won't go anywhere and you won't be able to enjoy the whole thing and might end up flipping burgers at McDonald's. |
