As students, we’re always on the lookout for good deals and opportunities. Here’s a list of some wonderful things and places at the University of Waterloo that you probably never heard of, but should definitely check out.
1. Surplus Sale
At the end of every other month, the University takes all their extra furniture, supplies, etc. out of storage and sells it for CHEAP. I purchased an iMac for $275. They also have chairs, desks, mini fridges, and 10-inch radial arm saws. Check in April to see what they've got. I've seen chairs for $2 that are better than my office chair from Staples.
2. Organizational & Human Development (OHD) Leadership Workshops
There are leadership workshops at MC for frizzle. If you complete 12 workshops by the time you finish your undergrad, you get a certificate. Workshops are free and topics include: conflict management, presentation skills, and being new to a team (useful for co-op students).
3. Environment Student Society Coffee Shop
Probably the cheapest place on campus to get food and drinks. They are located in the basement of EV1. They have coffee, tea, chai lattes, apple cider, and hot chocolate. Most drinks are $1-$2. Also, they have samosas, meat and vegetable dishes, and rice. Most hot entrees are under $5, and they have a great selection of pastries as well. If there are day old muffins and bagels leftover, you can grab em' for 50-75 cents.
4. Lynda.com (Thanks Dan R!)
This website has online videos that teach you any Microsoft Office Program, Photoshop, CAD, etc. Just send an email to [email protected] to get access.
5. Get Microsoft Office 2013 for $11
Perks of being a Waterloo Student. Yes, this is legitimate/legal. (Thanks Reddit!)

6. Knowledge Integration Seminars
Shameless plug for being the KI co-op student. The KI department hosts weekly seminars every Friday from 2:30-4:00pm. They have guest speakers about a wide range of topics. Check out the speaker schedule online. Also, there are snacks afterwards.
